MIGRATION AND REFUGEES

Skaramanga

Since 2013, Crete For Life has distributed essential aid, such as food, clothing, toiletries, medicine and medical treatments, psychological professional support as well as legal aid when necessary, focusing on children, minors and those who are most vulnerable. More recently, we were able to offer support both in the local community of Ierapetra and in other parts of Crete and mainland Greece.

It is estimated that up to 90% of Greece’s agriculture wage labourers are economic migrants. Farm work is often the only option for them when they arrive in the country without accommodation, money or legal status. Exploitation and indignity of undocumented migrant labour is rife in Greece, many labourers are minors or very young adults, and most of them are not even receiving any of their low salaries (around € 20 per day) they are owed. They stay for lack of a better option, to help their families.
