TOMATO EXPRESS
South-East Crete is a vital engine of Greek agricultural production, yet an estimated tons and tons of perfectly good tomatoes and other vegetables are thrown away every year. This is purely due to strict commercial distribution standards that reject produce for being the “wrong” size or shape. Farmers are heartbroken to discard the fruits of their labor, especially when, right here on Crete and across Greece, families and children are struggling with food insecurity.
Our Solution: The Tomato Express program rescues this high-quality, “imperfect” produce. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, Crete for Life distributes tons of freshly picked vegetables, ensuring this healthy food reaches those who need it most.
- Locally and Beyond: We deliver to local families in need, social kitchens, and other charities across Crete, Athens, and mainland Greece, including refugee camps, schools, and hospitals.
- Environmental Impact: This action directly reduces agricultural waste, conserves the resources (water, land, energy) used to grow the produce, and shifts the narrative from “waste” to nutritional wealth.
PRESERVING OUR COASTLINE
The pristine beaches of Crete are a treasure we are determined to protect. We organize regular beach clean-ups with dedicated volunteers to combat the growing threat of plastic pollution and litter. Keeping our coastline clean not only preserves the island’s beauty for residents and visitors but also protects marine life and the delicate coastal ecosystem.
PROTECTING OUR HEROES AND HOMES
Crete is increasingly vulnerable to devastating wildfires. When the government fails to fully equip them, we step in to support the brave individuals who risk their lives to protect us. Through our Protecting Our Heroes initiative, we rally support to supply our volunteer firefighters with the essential protective gear they urgently need to safely defend our homes, forests, and communities. This crucial aid ensures they can continue their vital work of fire protection and environmental defense.
