A New Currency for Syria
Syria on Monday unveiled details of its new currency in an official announcement described as a pivotal step in a national economic strategy aimed at strengthening monetary stability, restoring confidence in the Syrian economy, and supporting a path toward sustainable economic recovery.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria stated that the new currency design reflects a unifying national identity, drawing on symbolism tied to Syria’s nature and geography and moving away from the glorification of individuals. He described this step as the beginning of a new phase of trust and economic growth, provided that a responsible financial culture is maintained during the replacement period and that speculative practices harmful to the market are prevented.
The removal of two zeros from the old currency in the transition to the new one does not indicate an improvement in the overall economy; rather, it is intended to facilitate transactions. In this sense, the measure serves as an indirect tool to help manage inflation.
Furthermore, the replacement of the old currency, which featured images of both father and son Assad, is widely viewed as a symbolic declaration marking the definitive end of the Assad era in Syria.
