Syria, Fifteen Years On: Looking Back and Moving Forward

March 2026 marks fifteen years since the events of March 2011, which have significantly shaped Syria’s recent history and continue to influence conditions across the country.

Early developments included peaceful demonstrations, such as those that took place on March 15, 2011, in Al-Hamidiyah Souq in Damascus, where participants expressed demands related to freedom and dignity. Similar expressions were observed in other locations in the period that followed.

These events were followed by a prolonged period of conflict, resulting in widespread humanitarian, social, and economic impacts. Over the past fifteen years, communities across Syria have experienced displacement, loss of livelihoods, and disruptions to essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

The anniversary is being observed in multiple cities, including Aleppo, Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Latakia. Public gatherings and activities reflect the diverse experiences of communities and the lasting effects of the past years.

In 2026, commemorative activities also extend to parts of the Syrian Jazeera region, including Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and areas of Hasakah, where communities are participating alongside others across the country.

Fifteen years on, many communities continue to face ongoing challenges, including access to basic services, economic recovery, and rebuilding livelihoods. At the same time, local initiatives and community efforts remain an important part of the broader recovery process.

This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on the developments of the past fifteen years and to recognize the importance of continued support for affected populations, with a focus on recovery, resilience, and improved living conditions.
