Reverse Displacement: Syrians Return Home as Violence Escalates in Lebanon

Over the past two days, thousands of Syrians have crossed from Lebanon back into Syria, seeking safety as Israeli airstrikes intensify across parts of Lebanon.

For many families, the decision to leave has been difficult. Lebanon had become a place of refuge and work for countless Syrians over the years. But as the security situation worsens and fears of a wider conflict grow, many are now choosing to return home, hoping to find greater stability despite the challenges that remain in Syria.

According to the Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs, the Jdeidet Yabous crossing near Damascus and the Jousieh crossing in Homs province received around 11,000 people arriving from Lebanon on Monday. Most of them were Syrian nationals returning to their country.

Staff at the border crossings have been working to facilitate entry procedures and assist the arriving families. On the Syrian side, medical teams and ambulances have been deployed to provide immediate care to those who may need it after long and difficult journeys.

The scene at the border reflects a striking reversal of recent years. For a long time, many Syrians sought refuge or economic opportunity in Lebanon. Now, as violence escalates, thousands are making the journey back.

With the situation in Lebanon continuing to deteriorate, the number of people crossing the border is expected to rise in the coming days. For many families, it is yet another chapter in a long story of displacement—this time returning to the place they once called home.
